Getting into Event Planning

In 2000, while working as an Interior Decorator and Designer, I got the opportunity to help a client organise an event. I enjoyed working on that event so much that I decided this could be a career that I should pursue.  I searched online and found a Wedding & Event Consultant program, which cost a small fortune and I signed up.

Eight months later I finished the course and was thrilled with my accomplishments.  At the time, my Interior Decorating & Design business was going really great so I put the idea of Wedding & Event Planning to the back of my mind.

My career was going great but I had a longing to create fabulous events

So, fast forward to 2009… we have gorgeous children and got married. I planned our own wedding and LOVED every moment. Work in interior decorating and design is still going great but I had this longing to create fabulous events. I decided to do another course in Wedding Planning (to update my skills) and additional courses in Event Management and Project Management.

I finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up

By 2014, we had another beautiful child (that’s four in case you’re counting), I had planned and created two music festivals, and at that point I knew, this was it, event management was for me. It was like that light bulb moment when you finally figure out what you want to be when you grow up.

It’s hard to describe the feeling of euphoria you get

It’s hard to describe the feeling of euphoria you get, when all the months of planning and coordinating are finally coming together, and you know this wedding or event is going to be something really special. It’s a bit like the buzz you get from jumping out of a plane with a parachute… and I’ve done that too !

About Me – Rachel Walsh

Heels or flats? I’m definitely a heels girl, but they’re more likely to be heels in boots… bit of a rock chick!

My husband is: My best friend in the whole wide world. Love.him.to.bits.

Favourite holiday destination: Skiing anywhere in the world. Sunshine and snow – it doesn’t get any better!

Biggest accomplishments: The very first big event I planned and organised was a two-day music festival. This event attracted 2,200 visitors over the two days. AND. Making four little humans and keeping said humans alive. No seriously, they are awesome… so much fun !

Favourite movie: I love a good comedy but a Christmas tradition we have with our kids is a Star Wars marathon… and I mean ALL the movies – fire lighting, snacks, snuggled up under blankets, nobody moves for hours !

Perks of the job: Creating awesome memories for my clients who become good friends … oh and did someone mention cake tasting?
